"Return To Comfort And Balance"
Ortho-Bionomy
Frequently Asked Questions
1) What Is Ortho-Bionomy?
Ortho-Bionomy is a form of bodywork that relieves pain, immobility,
and structural imbalance due to injury or stress. It facilitates the
process of assisting people in finding comfort by tapping into the
body's self-healing and self-balancing abilities. It can be thought of as
a means of reeducating the body to be comfortable.

2) What is a session like?
During an Ortho-Bionomy session you remain fully clothed. The
practitioner does an assessment to determine structural balance and
freedom of movement in joints. Gentle movement, positioning, and
holding are used to release patterns of tension in the body. Other
techniques might include gentle isometrics to engage muscles and
further their release as well as posture exercises to increase
awareness. An emphasis is put on your comfort.

3) How is Ortho-Bionomy different from massage?
During massage you are undressed and draped with a sheet. Oil is
used on the skin as gliding, friction, and kneading strokes are applied
to relieve muscle tension.
During Ortho-Bionomy you remain fully clothed. No oil is used.
Instead of massage strokes, movement and positioning are applied to
release tension and restore balance. Although very gentle and often
subtle, Ortho-Bionomy is very deep in it's effect. Most find it's
changes last longer.

4) How does Ortho-Bionomy work?
Ortho-Bionomy works directly with  the part of the nervous system
that keeps track of where the various parts of our bodies are in space
and time, the mechanism that gives our body awareness of itself and
keeps us balanced. When the body encounters a threat from injury
or stress it takes on defensive patterns of tension to protect us. This
is beneficial. The problem is that these tension patterns often stay
stuck after the threat has passed. By using Ortho-Bionomy to
position the body for comfort, messages are sent to the brain that
say it can let go of the tension and allow the body to return to a
relaxed posture.

5) What conditions can Ortho-Bionomy help with?
Ortho-Bionomy is useful for a number of conditions including:
  • Chronic Pain: Neck, back, and all joints.
  • Injury: Muscle pain, repetitive strain, whiplash, joint immobility.
  • Pain issues that don't respond to conventional treatments.
  • Headaches.
  • TMJ
  • Scoliosis.
  • Pelvic imbalance and leg length difference.
  • Sciatica
  • Fibromyalgia.
  • Chronic fatigue syndrome.
  • Thyroid imbalance.
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
  • Digestive difficulty.
  • Lack of energy.
  • Visceral balancing.
  • Physical symptoms associated with stress and emotional
    response.
  • Improving inner awareness.

6) What makes Ortho-Bionomy unique?
Most therapies work against the body, trying to force it back where it
is supposed to be. Ortho-Bionomy is unique in that it works "with"
the body, positioning to exaggerate what the body is already doing.
This exaggeration stimulates the bodies self-correcting reflexes, via
the nervous system, to release tension and restore balance (see
question 4). Because the healing comes from within, the results are
longer lasting. The body learns, or actually relearns, how to find and
retain comfort.

7) What do people notice during and after an Ortho-
Bionomy session?
The experience is often quite relaxing, in fact for most Ortho-
Bionomy is as relaxing as massage. Tension and stress seem to melt
away. After the session many people notice feeling taller. This is
usually due to corrected posture. Areas of pain usually show relief.
Occasionally it takes a day or two before relief is noticed. This is
because as tension patterns are released through Ortho_Bionomy
they continue to release throughout the body for the next two or
three days.
A sense of well-being is common.

8) How long does it take to get results?
Many clients notice immediate improvement in pain and balance after
the first session. For long term chronic pain it might take two to four
sessions before you notice significant change. A series of sessions
might be needed to achieve to your goals. Each person is unique.
Discuss this with your practitioner.

9) Is Ortho-Bionomy safe?
Although Ortho-Bionomy facilitates healing on the deepest levels it is
gentle and safe. The focus is on going where the body wants to go,
where it's comfortable. Force is never used.
Ortho-Bionomy is an affirming therapy that honors where you are,
within your comfort.
Ortho-Bionomy is not a replacement for medical care. Urgent medical
issues should be addressed immediately with a doctor. Ortho-
Bionomy can often be an important adjunctive therapy with medical
care.

10) Can Ortho-Bionomy be combined with Massage?
Yes. Ortho-Bionomy mixes well with Massage. While doing a Massage,
areas that are particularly tense can be released with Ortho-Bionmy,
then the Massage continues. Likewise Massage strokes can be used
to integrate changes from Ortho-Bionomy work.

11) How was Ortho-Bionomy developed?
Ortho-Bionomy has it's roots in Osteopathy which places emphasis
on the body's structure and balance. It was created by an Osteopath
named Arthur Pauls.
For more information on the history and development of Ortho-
Bionomy visit the
Society of Ortho-Bionomy Int.

12) What does the name Ortho-Bionomy mean?
The name Ortho-Bionomy comes from Greek roots. "Ortho" means
"the correct use of", "Bio" means "life", and "Nomy" means "the
principles or laws governing". Putting it together you have "the
correct use of the principles of life".

13) What is the philosophy of Ortho-Bionomy?
  • The client's comfort is of utmost importance. Ortho-Bionomy is
about facilitating the experience of comfort.
  • All movement is towards the client's comfort.
  • Following the path of least resistance. Going with the flow.
  • Acknowledging what is already happening and allowing it to
    change.
  • Being nonjudgemental.
  • Ortho-Bionomy honors the innate wisdom of the body.
